We advise CA solar owners on registration & sale of Renewable Energy Certificates
James Coombes has financed energy, real estate and telecom infrastructure for 29 years, with a specific focus on commercial solar since 2008.
We are uniquely positioned, with PPA, PACE, loan and lease financing partners across key commercial solar states. Although we do not disclose our current capital partner list, our deep solar industry transaction history positions us to partner with the most competitive and experienced financing partners in the industry.
Painted Rock Capital provides advisory services to contractors, developers, investors, lenders, product vendors, accounting and tax advisors, and commercial property owners. We have advised national and regional commercial property owners on site selection, project analytics (including design, system performance, and expected utility cost reduction), financing vehicles, and site prioritization. We work with capital providers, third party engineers, interconnection specialists, product specialists, and utility project developers to form the right team for each assignment.
James is the co-founder of American Renewable Capital (ARC), a solar PPA fund created in 2015. ARC subsequently combined with Technology Credit Corporation (TCC), the largest investor-owner-operator of commercial PPAs under 1 megawatt, with over 600 systems under finance. www.creditcorp.com
James has worked in all levels of the solar & storage industry. From 2008-2011, he worked in-house for solar contractor REC Solar, which was acquired by SunRun and Duke Energy. From 2011-2015, he developed commercial financing solutions for SunPower Corporation, financing over $30 million of projects through proprietary financing in partnership with TCC. After the ARC-TCC combination and transition of TCC to "portfolio mode", James joined the largest PACE financing provider, Ygrene Energy Fund.
Prior to the solar industry, James worked in high yield debt and M&A at First Boston, Salomon Brothers, and Salomon Smith Barney from 1993 to 2003. He advised on leveraged financing and private equity investment for independent cable television operators, and then on acquisitions of these operators by companies such as TCI, Comcast and Time Warner. In Tokyo, James advised on the IPO for Jupiter Telecommunications, the first publicly traded Japanese cable & broadband operator.
James has lectured on energy and project finance at the UC San Diego Rady School and Tulane University's Freeman School. He is a graduate of UC Berkeley.
Utility scale development of solar, energy storage and geothermal projects requires a team with a broad range of expertise - from utility and CCA relationships, to transmission and distribution, as well as permitting, environmental, and financing.
Painted Rock Capital Group partners with the utility developer Bamburgh Group to bring the deep bench required to develop this type of project. Utility solar projects differ substantially from commercial net-metered projects. These are true real estate development projects, with multi-year development timelines. The utility solar & storage market in California is changing, with new opportunities for smaller-scale projects, located close to the offtaker. CCAs are now active industry participants, and energy storage is required to provide off-peak resource adequacy.
